Garmin | Loading the JESI Check-In Preset

This article outlines how to load the JESI Check-In preset message onto a Garmin device for use with SafetyIQ (JESI).

Before You Begin

Please confirm:

  • The device has an active satellite subscription

  • You have access to a Windows or Mac computer

  • You have received the configuration file from SafetyIQ

Step 1: Update Device Firmware (Required)

Firmware updates must be completed using Garmin Express.

To Update Firmware:
  1. Download and install Garmin Express (Windows or Mac).

  2. Connect the Garmin 67i to your computer via USB.

  3. Follow prompts to install any available updates.

Step 2: Install the JESI Preset Message (File-Based Configuration)

SafetyIQ provides a configuration file that installs the JESI Check-In preset message only.

Installation Instructions:
  1. Plug the device into a computer via USB.

  2. Open File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac).

  3. Locate the Garmin folder on the device.

  4. Inside the Garmin folder, create a new folder called inReach.

  5. Copy the provided configuration file into the inReach folder.

  6. Safely eject and unplug the device.

  7. Power the device ON.

  8. When prompted, select Apply Updates.

  9. When the "Configuration Applied" screen appears, select OK.

Step 3: Confirm Preset Installation

Verify that Preset 1 is correctly configured.

On the Garmin 67i:

  1. Open the IR Messages icon.

  2. Select Send Check-In.

  3. Confirm that Preset 1 displays: JESI Check-In

For other Garmin devices:

  1. Open the Templates

  2. Confirm that Preset 1 displays: JESI Check-In

If the preset message does not appear, repeat the installation steps.

Step 4: Test the Device Before Going Live

Once the preset message is loaded, the device must be tested before deployment.

Create a Test Activity in JESI

The test Activity must:

  • Be longer than 20 minutes

  • Include two or more checkpoints

Test Criteria

The test is successful when:

  • Tracking appears on the JESI Map

  • The device receives the automated Check-In message

  • The device can respond to the Check-In message

  • The response is reflected correctly in the JESI platform

If any of these fail, contact SafetyIQ Support before issuing devices to field users.
